This year, for the sixth time in a row, the Serbian government intends to subsidize the purchase of electric vehicles. The grants amount to as much as EUR 5,000 per car.

The Government of Serbia will soon adopt a decree on subsidizing the purchase of electric vehicles based on the proposal of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The subsidies would also apply to the electric version of Fiat Grande Panda.

The start of serial production of the model in the city of Kragujevac is expected soon, Sandra Dokić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, told Tanjug.

The decree, in her words, should be adopted in late January. Citizens, legal entities, and entrepreneurs could then be able to apply for grants from early February. The expected deadline for submitting applications is October 31.

Dokić: The model manufactured in Kragujevac is also eligible for subsidies

Subsidies for passenger vehicles with up to nine seats and trucks weighing up to 3.5 tons will be EUR 5,000, Dokić added. The government has earmarked RSD 170 million (EUR 1.45 million) for subsidies, but the amount could be increased.

The purchase of electric two-, three- and four-wheelers will be subsidized with EUR 250 to EUR 500 apiece. The official noted that the Fiat Grande Punto is expected to become available in the Serbian market this year.

It means that buyers of the car would also be eligible for subsidies of EUR 5,000, she stressed.

Trial production in Serbia started in July

In mid-July last year, multinational automotive company Stellantis launched the trial production of its Fiat Grande Panda electric car in the Serbian city of Kragujevac. At the time, it said it would begin serial production in October. With the announced state subsidies, the electric car from the Kragujevac plant could cost around EUR 18,000.

The ministry previously said that subsidies for the purchase of EVs are one of the measures to improve air quality. The ministry said it subsidized the purchase of around 2,800 environmentally friendly vehicles over the last five years.
