Acciona Energía has been awarded a 12-year contract for difference (CfD) at Croatia’s latest auction, for its Promina photovoltaic project.

Solar power project Promina with a proposed peak capacity of 189 MW is under development, Spanish company Acciona said.

It is the largest project that won premiums at Croatia’s auction. Acciona was successful at the country’s first auction in July 2022 as well. Back then premiums were awarded to only two wind farm projects, both run by it.

The company now said Promina would be built in the Šibenik-Knin county in southern Croatia and that it would be the largest solar power plant in the country upon commissioning in 2027. It would have more than 300,000 modules, generating an overall 320 GWh per year. It is enough to meet the energy needs of 69,000 domestic households, reducing CO2 emissions by 140,000 tonnes a year, according to Acciona.

The firm will also build a 400 kV interconnection substation

As part of the project, the firm is set to build a 400 kV interconnection substation on the site to transfer the energy into the national transmission grid.

According to Acciona, Promina marks a further step in its commitment to the Croatian renewables market. It would join the Opor (27 MW) and Boraja II (45 MW) wind projects under construction, and the Jelinak wind complex (30 MW), which the company has been operating in the country since 2013.

Acciona Energía is expected to become the main producer of clean energy in Croatia

Upon the completion of the above projects, Acciona Energía is expected to become the main producer of clean energy in Croatia, with around 8% of the country’s installed renewables capacity and 20% of total solar power capacity in operation, the announcement reads.

The company said the Promina PV plant would fall under its social impact management program. It implies reinvesting a portion of the facility’s annual revenue to support education, wellness, and environmental stewardship programs in the communities in which it operates, Acciona added.
