The Government of Slovenia and Renault have signed a memorandum of understanding on the production of a new version of the electric model Twingo in Revoz, part of the French carmaker group.

The memorandum of understanding, signed by Prime Minister Robert Golob and the company’s Vice President Herbert Steiner, responsible for passenger cars and the Renault brand industry, demonstrates that Revoz beat the competition for manufacturing the upgraded version of the electric Twingo.

Production is scheduled to start in 2026, and the expected annual production is 150,000 vehicles, RTV Slovenia reported. Of note, a few days ago Stellantis launched the production of electric cars in Serbia.

Last year both Twingo programs were suspended in Revoz, leaving Clio to be assembled in one shift.

Renault could receive subsidies from the Slovenian government

The factory has been making Renault’s vehicles since 1973. Currently it has around 1,400 employees.

Prime Minister Robert Golob noted that the negotiations began a year and a half ago, when the future of Revoz was very uncertain. It was when the numbers of shifts and workers were reduced.

The memorandum envisages a deal between Renault and the Government of Slovenia on joint development of a production line for a new electric car at the facility, Golob stressed.

According to the document, Renault could benefit from state support. The government acknowledged its investment as strategic, but the conditions for subsidies and the amount are still under negotiation.

Jože Bele, general manager of Revoz, said its first goal is to maintain the current number of employees, but he also expects new job openings.

The memorandum guarantees stable business for Revoz and progress in the areas of digitalization, artificial intelligence, decarbonization and sustainable mobility, he explained.

Electric cars are the future, Minister of Economy Matjaž Han underscored. With the new electric car production line, Slovenia is strengthening its economy and its role in the European and global markets, he said.

The Twingo E-Tech electric model is a response to the decarbonization push, air quality issues and the efforts for affordable e-mobility and reindustrialization of Europe, Renault’s representative Herbert Steiner pointed out.
