EoLIS – the End-of-Life Issues and Strategies Seminar – is WindEurope’s annual gathering of wind farm operators, developers, manufacturers, academics, and sustainability experts. This year it will be held on November 22-23 in Rotterdam.

WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson said Europe has 255 GW of wind energy today, but that a considerable part is made up of older turbines – reaching the end of their service life.

“Some have already been earmarked for lifetime extension and some for repowering. Many will be decommissioned and their component parts dismantled,” Dickson stressed.

EoLIS, in his words, will try to give answers to the crucial choices that have to be made – whether to repower, extend or fully decommission the facilities and how to deal with the decommissioned equipment.

By 2030, EU will need almost 500 GW of wind energy

It will also focus on business models, market trends, technology challenges and how the wind industry is handling the sustainability aspects.

Wind energy will be the cornerstone of the new sustainable European energy system. By 2030, the European Union will need almost 500 GW of wind energy.

“Delivering on these ambitions will require our industry to step up. Installation of new wind farms will be required, but we will also need to maximise our existing assets through lifetime extension or repowering,” Dickson said.

The event will be held in Rotterdam – the biggest seaport in Europe and a major hub for domestic turbines. And also, as it happens, a haven for repurposed turbines, in a variety of forms, WindEurope said.

Registration is open and you can check out the programme here.
