Serbia’s transmission system operator Elektromreža Srbije (EMS) will use Energy Exemplar’s modeling software Plexos to meet key objectives and manage a changing energy mix.

Over a three-year initial agreement period, Plexos modeling will allow EMS to use simulation technologies to model investments, including in conventional and renewable energy sources and infrastructure, Australia-based Energy Exemplar said and added that the Serbian state-owned utility plans extensive investments to renew its transmission capacities and expand them.

According to the firm, simulating markets will help EMS to plan short-, medium- and long-term procurement decisions, forecasting losses and investment opportunities.

Pleoxos will help Serbia to model future energy scenarios

Serbia’s energy mix currently heavily relies on coal, which accounts for about 70% of its energy needs, while the rest comes from hydropower.

In this situation, Pleoxos will help Serbia to model future energy scenarios and the long-term effects of greater investment into alternative energy to improve energy security, affordability and to integrate renewable energy storage.

Also, EMS will have a tool to accurately model hydro energy capacities.

Extensive modeling of line losses will help Serbia’s TSO to better understand and manage costs, and procure energy necessary for the compensation of transmission grid losses, Energy Exemplar said.

Utilizing technology is key for the energy transition

Nebojša Vučinić, Director of the Development Directorate at EMS, said energy markets across Europe are undergoing rapid and unprecedented change.

“Utilizing technology will be key to ensuring this transition is smooth. Plexos gives us the capability of testing scenarios around supply and demand, storage, pricing and integrating new forms of energy so EMS knows the impacts across long-term asset investments,” he added.

According to Michael Schneider, Senior Vice President and Head of EMEA at Energy Exemplar, EMS is playing a key role in helping Serbia to modernize and expand its energy infrastructure, as well as reducing the costs associated with line losses and investments while planning for a future-proof energy system.

“Plexos modeling will help simulate potential losses and future scenarios towards making more intelligent and informed decisions about the form and nature investment should take,” Schneider stressed.
