The proposal for an energy upgrade of the Presidential Palace in Nicosia is advancing on the implementation trajectory.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) completed the proposal and sent it to environment commissioner Ioanna Panagiotou, who forwarded it to the presidency, Energy News reported. Sources of InBusinessNews revealed the authorities seek the project for the residence to be cofinanced with the European Union with 85% coming from structural funds.

The planned measures should reduce consumption and save energy. The new hall will be connected to power from solar panels, windows and doors will be replaced for more efficient heating and cooling, and lighting will be reconstructed. The report said further studies should be conducted for future works on the building.

However, the object is old and under protection, making it difficult to preserve its character and at the same time implement the project. The article notes president Nicos Anastasiades and his associates have a busy schedule, which is an important factor for the dynamics. The plan focuses on organizing works on weekends and the launch is expected next year.

The Presidential Palace was destroyed in 1974, when everything burned down except the standing walls, which were damaged in the fire. The residence was rebuilt with financial aid from Greece and since 1979 it has been used for the same purpose.
