National potential for power generation from wind turbines is more than double its current installed capacity, which will reach 6 GW by the end of the year, compared to 4.76 GW in May, according to Mustafa Ataseven, president of Turkish Wind Energy Association (TWEA or Türeb).

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on the eve of Global Wind Day, June 15, he said the country can install more capacity and that this is a significant indicator that sustainability in the sector will be achieved. With the country’s vast wind potential, Ataseven added, it is important to ease the licence waiting period. He noted that in October Turkey agreed to allow a new licensing process to streamline and speed it up to ensure continued growth in the sector.

“Turkey’s installed capacity for wind power can reach 25 GW by 2020. We don’t have difficulties in finding financing and there are no technology-related issues. We believe we can reach that target,” he added, the agency’s Energy News Terminal reports.

The Global Wind Day is a worldwide event which is held annually in June. A photo competition organized by Tureb displays the potential of wind energy.
