China-based industrial conglomerate SANY Group reportedly intends, through its Singaporean subsidiary, to join forces with its Romanian partner for the largest hybrid energy project in Europe. It values the investment at just over EUR 1 billion.

Following cooperation with Mugurel Surupăceanu’s firms that launched a solar-plus-storage project in Romania’s Dolj county, Sany International (Singapore) signed a memorandum with his Danube Solar Seven for a much bigger investment, according to documents that Profit.ro obtained. The subsidiary of SANY Group, from China, aspires to build two solar parks of 800 MW each, a 2.34 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) and a data center with a 70 MW maximum load.

Surupăceanu was earlier a member of Parliament of Romania and the prefect of Gorj country. Danube Solar Seven would remain responsible for the Timis SANY project until the commercial operation date, COD.

Even separately, the two planned solar parks would currently be the largest in the EU

Investments in the two photovoltaic plants are estimated at EUR 320 million in total. The sites are in Uivar commune, on the border with Serbia, in Timiș county. Even separately, they would currently be the biggest in the European Union. However, there is a larger mature PV project underway, also in Romania.

SANY valued the BESS and data center at EUR 350 million each. It plans to build both in the territory of nearby Timișoara. The county capital and the biggest city in western Romania, it is on a European data highway that reaches Frankfurt, the article reads.

The Chinese investor would provide the core equipment including solar panels from its factory in Hunan province. It is the country’s first fully robotic production of the devices. SANY is also financing the investment. Notably, two other major hybrid projects have emerged at the same border over the past few years.

Surupăceanu has also sold photovoltaic projects totaling over 108 MW to Lithuanian asset manager INVL. SANY Group is a private conglomerate manufacturing and delivering heavy industrial machinery and equipment, and major onshore wind turbine maker. In Serbia, SANY Renewable Energy has wind farm projects Alibunar 1 and Alibunar 2.
