City of Niš in Serbia adds 61 hectares for solar power plant to spatial plan

Several companies showed interest in the construction of a solar power plant on 61 hectares near the village of Vrelo, according to the local authority in Serbia’s third-biggest city. The City Council of Niš passed changes to the spatial plan to enable the implementation of the project.

The City Council adopted the proposition for the first amendments to the Spatial Plan of the Administrative Area of the City of Niš, determining a location in the village of Vrelo in Pantelej municipality for the construction of a solar power plant.

Experts said the site at the mountain pass called Granada in the northeast is suitable for the purpose, according to Lidija Stefanović Nikolić, deputy chief of local public enterprise for planning Zavod za planiranje. She revealed the next step is to produce a detailed regulation plan for the area and file it for public review.

It will create the legal conditions to issue location and construction permits, Stefanović Nikolić said, as quoted by Južne vesti. Local officials reiterated that several companies are interested in the project at the location.

The lot spanning 61 hectares had a status of forest land so far, but it wasn’t covered with forest, Stefanović Nikolić explained.

City councilors decided at the same session to initiate the production of the city’s new spatial plan. The current one is 11 years old.
