Serbia’s power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije has announced a tender for the design documentation for co-incineration of alternative fuels in coal power plants Nikola Tesla A and Kostolac B.

State-owned company Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) is considering the possibility of using treated waste as additional fuel in the production of electricity and heat in thermal power plants, according to a public call.

The call doesn’t specify the type of waste, but the acronym SRF is used. It stands for solid recovered fuel, which is obtained from various types of solid waste.

EPS: It is a good option to solve the waste issue and reduce the use of coal

EPS stressed that co-incineration of alternative fuels would, in addition to removing waste in line with environmental protection standards, reduce the consumption of lignite in the production of electricity and heat.

The deadline for submitting bids is August 16. The design must be completed within eight months from the date of obtaining the necessary documents from EPS.

It is not an uncommon practice for coal power plants to burn SRF. Slovenian power utility Holding Slovenske Elektrarne (HSE) intended to introduce such a system in its Šoštanj thermal power plant, but eventually it gave up on the plan.
