Enel plans to install meters for all of its 2.7 million clients in Romania, in order to pave the way for smart cities and infrastructure, Business Review reported. The Italian utility’s Romanian subsidiary got approval from the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) to install another 110,000 smart meters as part of a pilot programme. Last year the company put in operation devices for over 30,000 clients.

“As the needs of clients evolve through the introduction of smart home appliances and distributed generation, which helps them become small energy producers, the installation of smart meters will become even more important,” said Georgios Stassis, head of Enel in Romania.

With smart meters, Enel will be able to find out what areas have significant issues with power outages and where more investments are needed.

Present on the Romanian market since 2005, Enel is currently the largest private investor in the energy domain, with operations in the electricity distribution and supply sector but also in the renewable energy production sector. Enel has over 3,100 employees in Romania and offers services to 2.7 million clients in three important regions: Muntenia South (including Bucharest), Banat and Dobruja (Dobrogea), covering almost a third of the distribution market.

In Muntenia, Enel will add 53,000 smart meters, while in Dobruja and Banat it will install 28,000 and 30,000, respectively.
