GEN-I launches community solar service for households

State-owned electricity supplier and trader GEN-I has launched  Solar community GEN-I, a solar energy service for self-consumption for households unable to install photovoltaic panels on their roofs. The service should protect consumers against energy price fluctuations on the international markets.

GEN-I’s Solar community allows citizens in Slovenia to lease solar panels installed under the community solar power plant model, lowering their electricity bills.

For years now, GEN-I has offered the installation of solar panels on household rooftops through its GEN-I Sonce service, with 3,000 solar power plants already installed.

The new service will ensure sustainably low prices for those households which do not have the possibility to install solar panels

The new service will also ensure sustainably low prices for households in Slovenia that do not have the possibility of installing a solar power plant on their roof, the GEN-i said on its website.

“We opened the doors of Solar community GEN-I, which will become the biggest self-sufficient community in the country. We will connect consumers from all around Slovenia with community solar plants and thus enable the self-consumption of electricity also for those households which cannot build their own solar power plant,” said Robert Golob, President of the Management Board of GEN-I.

Within the next three years, the plan is to install solar power plants of 100 MW

In 2022, the company will build solar power plants with a total capacity of 10 MW throughout Slovenia with its own funding. Within the next three years, the plan is to install solar power plants of 100 MW and to provide electricity self-sufficiency to more than 25,000 Slovenian households.

Consumers’ electricity costs will decrease by 60-70%

According to GEN-I, consumers’ electricity bills will be lower by up to 10% compared to their current bills.

With this program, household consumers will be safeguarded against energy price fluctuations on the international markets since their consumption will be linked to electricity generation at community solar power plants, the company said.

Of note, in June, GEN-I  announced a EUR 1 billion strategic development plan to accelerate and enable the decarbonization of Slovenia.
