Goodyear Slovenia, and Goodyear Turkey will be among the global tire producer’s first factories to use only renewable energy in production.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plans to use 100% renewable energy at its plants across Europe and Turkey in the first step of a multiple-phase plan to procure 100% renewable energy in all its facilities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa by the end of 2022, the company said.
France, Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, Turkey and the Netherlands will be included in the first phase, and other Goodyear locations such as Goodyear in South Africa, and Cooper Tire plants in Serbia and the United Kingdom will be reviewed in the second phase, the company said.
To ensure electricity has been produced from renewables, Goodyear will procure guarantees of origin
Of note, in June Goodyear finished the acquisition of United States–based Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.
For its seven plants, Goodyear will purchase around 700,000 MWh produced by renewable energy sources: hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. It will reduce the company’s carbon footprint by up to 260,000 tonnes. Goodyear said it would procure guarantees of origin to ensure the electricity has been produced from renewable energy sources.
The company’s long-term climate strategy envisages the reduction of carbon emissions intensity of 25% by 2023 versus the 2010 baseline.
“Switching to 100% renewable electricity at these production facilities fits perfectly with our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Chris Delaney, president, Goodyear EMEA.
