Portuguese power company Energias de Portugal (EDP) plans to convert a decommissioned thermal power plant in southern Spain into a green hydrogen production facility, in a EUR 550 million investment.

The objective of EDP is to turn the 570 MW coal-fired plant and its surroundings into a green hydrogen hub that will help decarbonize nearby industries as part of the energy transition, but also generate renewable energy for export by sea.

The plant, located in the town of Los Barros, is currently in the process of being dismantled, according to local media. Its closure has dealt a serious blow to the town’s economy, and local officials are hoping EDP’s project will help improve the situation.

The plan is to turn the area into a hydrogen hub to decarbonize nearby industrial facilities

The so-called Hydrogen Valley of the Bay of Algeciras will include green hydrogen, renewable energy production, and energy storage.

EDP is considering an energy storage project with 255 MW of lithium-ion batteries

In the energy storage segment, EDP is considering a project that would include lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 255 MW, it was reported following a meeting between EPD officials and the mayor of Los Barrios.
