Slovenia’s state-owned energy group GEN-I has prepared a EUR 1 billion strategic development plan to accelerate and enable the decarbonization of Slovenia.

Slovenia can be decarbonized before 2050 while achieving independence, reliability, competitiveness, green transformation of the power system, according to an analysis of the current status and potential development of the Slovenian power system produced by GEN-I. The company is active in the trade and sale of electricity and natural gas.

GEN-I vowed to invest EUR 1.06 billion in new technologies and decarbonization by 2030

Decarbonization in Slovenia can be achieved by 2040 without jeopardizing the security of supply, said Robert Golob, President of the Management Board of GEN-I, Dolenjski list reported.

GEN-I claimed it would invest EUR 1.06 billion in new technologies and decarbonization by 2030 and install solar power plants with a combined capacity of 1 GW.

GEN-I intends to decarbonize all its activities by 2025

It will meet about a third of the goals Slovenia has set for the period, Golob said, adding that about 20,000 solar power plants of various sizes are planned.

The company intends to invest in energy storage devices, and also to become the largest aggregator of flexibility at the transmission and distribution levels. GEN-I said it would decarbonize all its activities by 2025 in order to become the leading promoter of decarbonization of Slovenian society as soon as possible.

Traded amount of electricity to be increased by 100 times

With the upcoming investment plan and a complete focus on decarbonization, GEN-I added it plans a transformation from an energy company into a digital technology company.

GEN-I achieved a record profit in 2020 and a record amount of traded electricity, over 140 TWh. It said it wants to increase electricity sales on international wholesale markets to 1,000 TWh by 2030 or almost 100 times the electricity consumption in entire Slovenia.

The company said it intends to expand abroad in the retail sector with the acquisition of smaller suppliers in order to gain 1.2 million customers by 2030.
