Wind portfolio in Turkey increased by 687 MW in 2019

In 2019 Turkey added 687 MW of installed capacity in wind power plants, which is an increase of 9.32% from 2018. In percentage, this is the second-worst achievement from 2006, but in terms of installed capacity, only four years have seen better results.

According to the Turkish Wind Energy Statistic Report, the overall installed capacity of 198 wind farms in Turkey reached 8,056 MW at the end of 2019. The report was published by the Turkish Wind Energy Association’s (TUREB).

Wind power plants produced the largest amount of energy in August (2,639 GWh). The second-best result was in January, followed by March, September, and July. The lowest production was recorded in May (1,154 GWh) and October.

The average share of wind farms in electricity generation in Turkey was 7.42% in 2019. It was the highest in August – 10.01%, and the lowest in May – 4.91%.

According to the report, Turkey had 25 wind power plants under construction with a total installed capacity 1,309 MW.

The overall wind potential of Turkey is estimated at 48,000 MW.

“The energy sector in Turkey has been one of the top three leading sectors that ensured significant growth. Within this framework, renewable energy and especially wind energy have shown the most substantial growth,” president of TUREB said in the report.
