The European Union has secured technical assistance for the preparation of technical and tendering documentation for the construction of a wastewater collection and treatment plant in the City of Kraljevo and completion of remediation of the Grand Bačka Canal.

Memoranda of understanding for the two projects have been signed by the representatives of the EU Delegation to Serbia, the Government of Serbia, and the local municipalities. The parties also signed a memorandum of understanding for the modernization and the reconstruction of the railway line Velika Plana – Niš.

The technical assistance has been secured through European Union Project Preparation Facilities (EU PPF). The assistance for 15 projects in environment, transport, and energy efficiency sectors is worth EUR 21 million.

The EU PFF envisages the preparation of 9 environmental projects, as well as the preparation of 3 infrastructure projects in the area of transport and another 3 in the field of energy efficiency, the EU Delegation to Serbia said in a press release.

The EU is donating EUR 19.7 million, while Serbia will provide EUR 1.29 million.

The potential investment value of these projects exceeds EUR 850 million, the press release said.

The EU PPF is focused on the preparation of technical and tendering documentation for infrastructure projects, as well as on the organization of more than 70 capacity-building training sessions for representatives of relevant local and national institutions.

According to the EU PPF website, the “Kraljevo project” envisages the design and construction of a wastewater treatment plant with the capacity of 90,000 population equivalent and the possibility of a capacity increase up to 120,000, and (re)construction of priority sections of the wastewater collection network.

The purpose of Grand Bačka Canal project is to remove sedimentation (approx. 400,000 m3) from the canal over 6 km in length at the section Vrbas-Bezdan, to construct 3 areas for temporary disposal of the removed sediments, to remediate deposited sludge sediment, and to dispose of the treated sludge sediment.
