Vranje inks KfW-financed deals to build wastewater treatment facility, collector

Public water supply utility Vodovod Vranje has signed two agreements worth EUR 14.2 million with contractors for the construction of a wastewater treatment facility and a wastewater collector, financed by German development bank KfW.

“We are investing a total of EUR 250 million in the development of utility infrastructure in Serbia through the program with KfW, including ongoing projects and those being launched this year,” Serbian Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Minister Zorana Mihajlović said at the signing ceremony.

For his part, German Ambassador to Serbia Axel Dittman noted that the wastewater management project is only one in a series implemented in Vranje, recalling that the launch of works to build a pipeline from the Prvonek reservoir to Vranje was marked in 2016.

Similar projects are being implemented in 23 Serbian cities and municipalities, he added.

Around EUR 1 billion has been invested in Serbia in environmental protection alone since 2000, as part of the development cooperation between Germany and Serbia, Dittman said, noting that water supply and wastewater management is only a segment of the investment program.

According to reports, contractors on the latest projects in Vranje are Austria’s Strabag and Jedinstvo based in the west Serbian city of Užice.
