The Ugljevik power plant in Republika Srpska is going to have a CENTUM VP control system by Yokogawa Electric Corporation for a flue gas desulfurization system, the first of its type installed in the West Balkans. It will improve the environment and help meet environmental standards, required for joining the EU.

CENTUM VP integrated production control system for the monitoring and control of the flue gas desulfurization system will be delivered to Ugljevik by August 2018 by Yokogawa Electric Corporation, a Japanese electrical engineering and software company.

This system will start operating in October 2019, the company has announced in its press release. It is expected to help environment in the coal-fired Ugljevik’s vicinity to improve.

The 300 MW Ugljevik power plant supplies a quarter of the total electrical generation capacity of RS. It burns brown coal with high sulfur content so the emissions contain high levels of sulfur dioxide.

The upcoming project of delivery and installation of the control system CENTUM VP for a flue gas desulfurization system will be managed by the company’s subsidiary in Austria (Yokogawa GesmbH) and Belgrade-based Serbia office of Yokogawa Europe Branches B.V.

The order for CENTUM PV system for Ugljevik came from Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd (MHPS), a member of the consortium. This was the first order from the Western Balkan although MHPS in the meantime signed also the agreement with the biggest Serbian power plant.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) will also install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems in the Nikola Tesla A coal-fired power plant (TENT A) in Serbia. The project worth EUR 167 million will help reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) and particulates emissions, and enable Serbia to meet EU environmental standards.

This is the first time MHPS has received an order for FGD systems from Serbia.

The agreement on the construction of the desulfurization plant was signed between Serbian electric power company, Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), and MHPS this past  September in Belgrade.
