Montenegrin industry generated more than 680,000 tons of waste in 2016

Last year, the industry in Montenegro generated more than 680,000 tons of waste, and the energy sector was the major source of waste, according to data released by the Montenegrin statistical office Monstat.

Of 686, 522 tons of generated waste, 49.2 percent or 337,620 tons was generated in the mining sector in 2016. The sector of electricity and gas supply, steam and cooling accounted for 305,681 tons or 44.5 percent.

The share of the manufacturing industry in generated waste was 37.957 tons, or 5.5 percent, while the sector of water supply, waste water management and control of waste disposal accounted for 5.264 tons or 0.8 percent.

In the mining sector, 95.3 percent of generated waste was hazardous waste. In the other sectors almost all of generated waste was non-hazardous.

Of total generated and stored waste which amounted to 834.303 tons in 2016, the enterprises treated 813.409 tons: 2.9 percent of waste was processed, 83.9 percent disposed and 13.2 percent was temporarily stored.

The most common waste disposal method was backfilling (82.3 percent). It is followed by incineration with 8.3 percent, and recycling with 7.4 percent. The share of other procedures was up to 2 percent.

In 2016, the companies exported 4.513 tons of waste, while 16,381 tons were handed over to other companies in Montenegro.
