NGEN commissioned Austria’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS). It installed it in record time – just seven months. Located in Fürstenfeld, in the country’s southeast, the facility has 24 MWh in capacity and a maximum output of 12 MW. The successful endeavor is part of the company’s strategy to increase battery use in the DACH region – Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and beyond.
One of the key benefits of the new battery storage facility is the stabilization of the electricity grid through quick reactions to fluctuations. It also stores surplus energy from renewable sources such as solar and wind power and maintains stability during peak load times. The future of energy supply is green, efficient and intelligent, Slovenia-based NGEN said as it announced that it completed the project.
It is a leading international company that specializes in premium battery storage systems and smart energy solutions. It is developing systems of 1.6 GWh in total capacity in European countries. Its state-of-the-art innovative digitalized solutions for storing and managing energy enable a more stable, efficient power supply for energy companies, grid operators, industrial consumers and households.
Bernard: This battery storage facility is not only a technical achievement but also a symbol of what is possible when we combine sustainability and innovation
The battery storage system in Fürstenfeld is equipped with six Tesla Megapack 2XL battery modules utilizing lithium ion technology, with integrated cooling and control systems for optimized performance. Integrated into the local grid, it will provide support to energy suppliers and grid operators in the region.
“This battery storage facility is not only a technical achievement but also a symbol of what is possible when we combine sustainability and innovation,” said Roman Bernard, Co-Founder and CEO of NGEN Group.
Dolinar: Fürstenfeld is just the beginning
By storing excess renewable energy from sources such as solar and wind power and releasing it when needed, the system helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthens energy security. It will be especially important during peak times, to ensure grid stability and supply reliability when electricity demand exceeds supply.
According to the company, the new system demonstrates how technological solutions can support global climate goals while also bringing economic benefits. In September 2023, NGEN completed a BESS of 10.3 MW in operating power and 20.6 MWh in capacity in Arnoldstein. It was the biggest in Austria at the time.
“Fürstenfeld is just the beginning. Our vision is to contribute to the energy transition with intelligent battery storage systems throughout the DACH region and beyond,” said Matija Dolinar, Managing Director of NGEN GmbH.
DACH is an acronym for a group of three Central European countries: Germany (Deutschland – D), Austria (A), and Switzerland (Confoederatio Helvetica – CH).
NGEN Group provides business customers with a full-service model, which enables a unique all-in-power solution from planning and construction through to complete marketing. A particular highlight is the possibility of tapping into new income streams through the smart connection to energy markets, enabling companies not only to benefit from optimized energy management, but also to use their energy resources strategically for greater profitability.
