Bosnia and Herzegovina has launched a two-year project to develop a draft national strategy and roadmap for hydrogen.

The implementation of the project CEI Support to Hydrogen Strategy Development and Know-How Transfer for Bosnia and Herzegovina began with an official meeting in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The project is being jointly implemented by Green Sustainable Solutions, based in Croatia’s capital Zagreb, the Association for Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Sources (H2OIE), state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (EPBiH), and BiH-based company Energoinvest.

It is supported by the Central European Initiative (CEI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy.

With this project, Bosnia and Herzegovina is taking a decisive step toward a modern, sustainable, and competitive energy system, Energoinvest said.

H2OIE: The goal is sustainable integration of hydrogen into BiH’s energy system

Through this initiative, BiH is strategically positioning itself among countries that recognize hydrogen not merely as a passing technological trend, but as a pillar of future energy security, industrial transformation, and climate responsibility, the firm added.

At the initial meeting, partners exchanged experiences, analyzed European and regional best practices, and confirmed their ambition to integrate hydrogen technologies into the country’s long-term development policies.

According to the Association for Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Sources (H2OIE), the project aims to strengthen institutional capacities and facilitate knowledge transfer for the sustainable introduction of hydrogen technologies into the national energy system.

A key opportunity for energy security and industrial decarbonization

“Through expert workshops, study visits to the EU, advisory missions, and the drafting of the national strategy and roadmap for hydrogen, the project enables the identification of potential, constraints, and development priorities,” H2OIE explained.

Hydrogen represents a key opportunity for BiH to strengthen energy security, support industrial decarbonization, and position itself within the European energy market, in the association’s view.

Energoinvest noted that hydrogen represents a strategically important development opportunity for BiH, given the country’s rich renewable energy sources, strong industrial tradition, and favorable geographical position.
