Greece-based PPC Group and Metlen Energy and Metals are joining forces to develop battery energy storage projects of up to 1.5 GW and 3 GWh in total, across three countries. In 2024, they signed a deal for 2 GW of solar power in the pipeline in the region.

Government-controlled Public Power Corp. – PPC Group signed an agreement with Metlen Energy and Metals on the establishment of an equally-owned joint venture. The Greek energy companies aim to develop projects for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Romania, Bulgaria and Italy, and build and operate them.

The deal is for up to 1.5 GW in capability of two-hour liquid-cooled devices of the LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) type. It translates to 3 GWh in storage capacity. PPC Group and Metlen, earlier known as Mytilineos, expect to complete 1 GW within just one year.

They are combining their expertise in development, construction and energy management, according to the update. PPC Group is present in all three countries, while Metlen is responsible for a timely and high-quality construction of the projects.

In 2024, they signed a deal for 2 GW of solar power in the pipeline in Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. Metlen is building and commissioning the facilities, and PPC Group is buying them when complete.

Beyond supporting the operation of adjacent photovoltaic and wind parks, the storage stations will contribute to the stability of the electricity system, the companies said.

PPC Group pointed out that the new deal secures the implementation of a significant portion of its energy storage target over the next three years, while ensuring rapid execution. For METLEN, it is a milestone in the implementation of its strategy for a strong presence in energy storage projects at a European level.

“This agreement creates value for both parties and further expands our group’s already significant presence in Southeast Europe,” said PPC Group’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Renewables Konstantinos Mavros.
