Portugal-based Greenvolt, owned by US investment fund KKR, has secured a EUR 348 million financing package for the 253.1 MW Ialomiţa Nord wind power project under construction in Romania. It has agreed to sell to Engie Romania, a subsidiary of French energy giant Engie. Greenvolt has also secured a loan for a 49.8 MW wind park in Transylvania and acquired a 155 MW wind project in Călărași county.
The financing for the Ialomiţa Nord wind project will be provided by UniCredit Bank, Erste Group Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, Société Générale, BRD Groupe Société Générale, and Siemens Bank, Greenvolt said in a press release.
The agreement to sell the project to Engie was signed in December 2025. Greenvolt Power, a member of Greenvolt Group, remains responsible for its construction and commissioning, which is targeted for 2027. The transaction will be completed once the project has reached commercial operation date (COD), according to the update.
Engie will take over the Ialomița Nord wind farm once it is completed
The wind farm, located in Ialomița county in southeastern Romania, will be among the largest wind farms in Romania. It will have 42 turbines supplied by US-based energy equipment and services provider GE Vernova.
Ialomiţa Nord will sell electricity through a 15-year contract for difference (CfD), secured in an auction in 2024. The wind farm is part of the broader Wind Rose platform, with a combined capacity of 506 MW, Greenvolt added.
Greenvolt’s utility-scale project pipeline in Romania comprises 555 MW of wind, 77 MW of solar, and 156 MW of battery energy storage projects. Engie Romania, for its part, currently operates three wind farms totaling 178 MW and six photovoltaic parks totaling 70 MW in peak capacity.
Greenvolt gets loan for 49.8 MW wind farm, buys 155 MW project
The company has recently secured EUR 58.5 million in project finance from Erste Group Bank and Banca Comercială Română (BCR) to support the development of a 49.8 MW onshore wind project in Săcele, in the Transylvania region in central Romania, according to its website.
Construction works are already underway, and completion is expected in the second quarter of 2026.
Greenvolt is also acquiring a stake in a Romanian company developing a 155 MW wind farm project in Călărași county, Profit.ro has reported. Romania’s competition regulator said the company, called CEF Pelicanu, would be owned by Greenvolt, without specifying the stake, according to the report.
The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in 2028 and start commercial operations in September 2023. About two-thirds of its capacity, or 107.3 MW, will benefit from the CfD scheme.
