Renewable energy company Masdar from the United Arab Emirates has unveiled a solar and energy storage project for the production of baseload electricity. It would be the largest facility of its kind in the world.

At the opening ceremony of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar presented a project for a photovoltaic facility of 5.2 GW in peak capacity with a 19 GWh battery energy storage system.

Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, unveiled the world’s first renewables and battery storage facility that would provide uninterrupted power at scale in Abu Dhabi, around the clock.

It will transform renewable energy into baseload energy for the first time, the company said. The investment is estimated at USD 6 billion.

Masdar is developing the project in partnership with state-owned Emirates Water and Electricity Co. (EWEC), setting a global benchmark in clean energy innovation.

According to Masdar, it will mark a pivotal moment in the clean energy transformation. Delivering up to 1 GW of continuous baseload power, it would be the largest combined solar and BESS facility in the world, supplying renewable energy 24/7.

“As we enter the second quarter of the 21st century, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment. We are standing at the edge of two worlds, the world as we know it, and the world as it could be. This is a moment that I like to call the nexus of next,” Al Jaber said.

Al Jaber: We have an answer

He noted intermittency has been one of the biggest barriers for the development of renewables for decades. However, the record-breaking project in the UAE would remove the barrier and provide constant power 24 hours a day.

“How can we power a world that never sleeps with energy sources that do? How can we transform renewable resources into reliable power? Today, we have an answer,” he stressed.
