Local authorities approved the construction permit for the Mintia gas power plant project, which has a status of national importance. The site is at a former coal power plant in Hunedoara county in the western part of Romania.

After completing all administrative procedures, the project received the construction permit, which means that the investment is moving forward, a member of the Senate of Romania and former prefect of Hunedoara County Călin Marian said on Facebook.

The facility, in his words, should be operational in 36 months from the start of the works.

The investment, worth almost EUR 1.5 billion, is an important economic achievement, but also a strategic step for Romania’s energy future. The new state-of-the-art plant, with a capacity of 1,700 MW, will be the largest and most advanced in Europe, Marian added.

The government has declared the Mintia gas power plant a project of national importance

He added that the endeavor would create over 600 jobs. The cogeneration project is aligned with Romania’s commitments as a European Union member state, as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for electricity generation, the lawmaker stressed.

In early December, the Ministry of Energy declared the Mintia gas power plant a project of national importance. Such investments are exempted from fees and even from rules against construction in protected areas.

The project for the Mintia gas power plant was developed by Mass Global Energy Rom

The project is important for baseload electricity due to rising needs from the massive integration of intermittent renewable sources.

Among other gas power projects in the pipeline in Romania, Romgaz is preparing to build a large facility, while Greece-based Public Power Corp. (PPC) recently revealed a plan for gas peaker plants of 300 MW in total.

The project for the Mintia gas power plant was developed by Mass Global Energy Rom, owned by Jordanian entrepreneur Ahmad Ismail Saleh. The firm has recently signed a connection contract with Romania’s transmission system operator Transelectrica.
