Only 2.75% of North Macedonia’s electricity consumption last year was covered with imports, a drop from more than 30%, registered in 2021, as new photovoltaic capacity soared 251% year on year, according to data from the country’s Energy, Water Services and Municipal Waste Management Services Regulatory Commission (ERC or RKE).

Describing North Macedonia once again as an “El Dorado” of investments in photovoltaic plants, RKE chief Marko Bislimoski said the country was on the verge of becoming energy independent when it comes to electricity.

North Macedonia’s overall renewable electricity capacity increased by a total of 551.2 MW in the last two years. In 2023, the growth was 399 MW, or two and a half times more than the year before.

In 2022, RKE issued licenses for 152.2 MW of renewable energy facilities, of which 106.5 MW were solar power plants.
