German renewables developer wpd is preparing a 528 MW wind farm project in Romania’s Bucovina region on the border with Ukraine.

In addition to the ongoing solar power boom, Romania is increasingly attracting investments in wind power and energy storage with its subsidies and legal reforms. The country is about to pass an offshore wind power law and conduct auctions for contracts for difference (CfDs). Profit.ro has just learned of another major project underway – wpd is planning a 528 MW wind farm.

The location is near the town of Siret in Suceava county, on the border with Ukraine. The German company is planning to commission the facility in the historical Bucovina area within three years, the article adds.

Four projects in wind portfolio in Romania

Romania hosts the largest onshore wind power plant in Europe. The Fântânele-Cogealac-Gradina system has 600 MW. It could be matched by a project for which Rezolv Energy recently signed the grid connection agreement.

Wpd, headquartered in Bremen, obtained technical connection terms in November from Romania’s transmission system operator Transelectrica for a wind farm of 128 MW in the commune of Butea in Iași county. It has two other projects under development in Brăila, in the country’s east.

The company earlier established subsidiaries WPD Offshore Black Sea 1 and WPD Offshore Black Sea 2 for projects of 500 MW and 1.4 GW, respectively. But then it sold its entire offshore division in 2022 to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).

Investments throughout Balkans

Founded in 1996, wpd develops, finances, builds and operates wind farms and solar parks in 31 countries. North Macedonia declared its 415 MW wind power project Virovi a strategic investment in 2021. However, the partnership is yet to be formalized by a special law.

Elsewhere in the region tracked by Balkan Green Energy News, the firm is investing in wind farms in Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
