The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, set to be implemented from 2024 to 2033. It is the first time that Serbia initiated and coordinated the adoption of a thematic resolution since becoming a member of the global organization again in 2000.

The UN General Assembly has adopted the resolution on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2033 at the initiative of the cabinet of the Prime Minister of Serbia Ana Brnabić and the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the UN.

Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begović said it is a highly important moment for Serbia and the international community.

Begović: Serbia has demonstrated its commitment to the development of science, technology, and innovation to achieve sustainable development

“With the initiative, we have demonstrated our commitment to the development of science, technology, and innovation to achieve sustainable development. I am proud of the teamwork and dedication of all shareholders who contributed to the adoption of the resolution, she stressed.

The resolution on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development is, in Begović’s words, a confirmation of Serbia’s determination to give science a key role in solving global challenges and achieving sustainable development. Through cooperation with other members of the UN, Serbia intends to use all the possibilities offered by science to achieve the goals for a sustainable future, the minister added.

According to the ministry, the resolution is a result of constructive negotiations between Serbia’s diplomats in New York and about 40 UN members.

The resolution is another step forward for Serbia in achieving sustainable development goals

The International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development will provide a platform for the cooperation of all relevant shareholders, including UN member states, UN organizations, academia, the civil sector, and the private sector, to promote science as key to achieving a sustainable future, the statement reads.

Begović pointed out that the resolution is yet another step forward for Serbia in achieving sustainable development goals.

“We will continue to work together with the international community to ensure that science is the engine of positive change and the creation of a better future for all,” she said.
