Croatia’s energy independence is just wishful thinking, according to a LinkedIn post from Julije Domac, the special adviser on energy and climate at the Office of the President of Croatia.

Describing a graph he posted below, Domac wrote: “This is what the curves of electricity consumption and production in Croatia look like today. The white ‘belly’ is the energy we import. Green is mainly wind, which is always less abundant in the summer months, and blue is hydropower plants, whose output drops due to droughts. What we lack are solar power plants, which we haven’t built for lack of wisdom, political vision, and common sense.”

“In the years of high energy prices and low interest rates, when construction was rampant all over Europe, Croatia was asleep, and we did very little, almost nothing, in the energy sector. On this day, around 3 pm, we were importing 32% of the electricity we needed…”

“Electricity consumption throughout Europe is constantly growing, and it will be the same in Croatia. New buildings are heated and cooled with heat pumps, transportation is being electrified. No, we are not energy independent, we are on the way to becoming an energy-poor country, very vulnerable and exposed,” Domac wrote.
