Parquet manufacturer Bauwerk Group Hrvatska and E.ON Solar have signed an agreement on the construction of a biomass facility in Croatia with a capacity of 1.1 MW and a heat capacity of 6 MW.

The EUR 17 million contract was signed by Bauwerk Group Hrvatska, a member of Swiss Bauwerk Group, and E.ON Solar, which operates within energy supplier E.ON Hrvatska Group – a subsidiary of Germany-based E.ON. The cogeneration plant in the town of Đurđevac in Croatia’s north, close to the border with Hungary, is planned to be fueled by wood chips from leftovers from the production of parquet.

The envisaged biomass cogeneration facility would be the biggest investment so far by E.ON Hrvatska contracted under a power purchase agreement (PPA). The contract was signed for a period of seven years.

The two firms have signed a seven-year PPA

Construction will take more than a year and a half on a turnkey basis. Experts from E.ON will be in charge of all phases of implementation – from design, construction, testing and commissioning to operation, while Amarc was selected for construction.

Igor Benaković, President of the Management Board of Bauwerk Group Hrvatska, stressed that the company is continuing its decarbonization path after in 2022 it switched all forklifts to electric drive and completed the first phase of the installation of a photovoltaic plant.

The investment paves the way for circular economy

“The facility will enable the stability of supply of the two most important energy sources for production – heat and electricity, and strengthen our circular economy model, because the waste generated in production will be used for the production of energy, which will be then used in production,” Benaković stated.

According to Andreas Rorig, President of the Management Board of E.ON Hrvatska, the company has knowledge and experience in various energy solutions such as biomass. “We will help Bauwerk to produce electricity for self-consumption, and reduce expenses,” he added.
