Zorlu Energy – Enerji Elektrik Üretim AŞ, independent power producer and member of Zorlu Energy Group – Grubu, will construct its 95 MW power plant Kızıldere 3 using solutions provided by Toshiba Corp. The Turkish company ordered a flash steam turbine system and generator for its geothermal project in Aydın province of West Anatolia, 150 kilometres from the Aegean Sea. The supplier, a Japan-based conglomerate, said it would deliver the the 72 MW unit in December.

Energy consumption in Turkey is growing fast, driven by population growth and economic development – estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicate demand will more than double in the next decade, Toshiba said and added the national government is targeting 2.5 GW of geothermal power generation capacity in 2023 against the current 620 MW. “Most plants will be built in the geothermal-rich Aegean region, in the west of the country. Toshiba, with Zorlu Energy Group, will continue to cooperate in developing Turkey’s power sector, and aims to expand its business not only in geothermal power but also in the thermal, and hydropower generation sectors”, according to the statement.

Kızıldere 3 is a high-efficiency triple flash combined-cycle power plant, one of the largest in Europe and the Middle East. It will integrate Toshiba’s system, which uses steam under high pressure, with a 23 MW binary cycle power generation unit utilizing a flash turbine exhaust steam to vaporize working fluid with a lower boiling point and use it to drive a turbine, the Japanese company said. The binary system will be supplied by Ormat Technologies Inc. The company based in the United States is Toshiba’s partner in other geothermal projects.
