Outgoing Prime Minister Dritan Abazović met in Podgorica yesterday with the representatives of foreign companies gathered in a consortium led by United States–based UGT Renewables. They discussed new energy projects in Montenegro and the possibility to support government-controlled coal and power producer Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) in the construction of energy facilities.

“The representatives of the consortium were our guests today, and I was honored today to discuss large and serious energy projects”, outgoing Prime Minister of Montenegro Dritan Abazović wrote on Facebook, public broadcaster RTCG reported.

Abazović: We aim to enable EPCG to start building energy facilities

Abazović hosted the leading officials of a consortium comprising UGT Renewables, headquartered in the US, South Korean companies Hyundai and Hanwha, Japan-based Hitachi Energy and US companies Tesla Energy, Next Tracker and Shoals Technology.

Abazović said it is necessary to strive toward achieving an energy balance in Montenegro and added: “The goal is to use the advantages and enable EPCG to start building energy facilities, which means to produce electricity using our country’s great solar potential.”

High-level representatives of Hyundai Engineering and EXIM Bank also participated at the meeting

The outgoing prime minister underscored that Montenegro is facing difficult autumn and winter, but that long-term thinking is necessary.

“We have to build an energy-efficient country and we must do it as soon as possible,” Abazović pointed out.

Of note, UGT Renewables signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Serbia a year ago on the development of solar power plant projects of 1 GW in combined capacity.
