While governments across the region are struggling to secure enough wood pellets at affordable prices for citizens, the Sarajevo Canton is moving forward with its plan to ensure sufficient quantities of the fuel by building a state-owned pellet factory.

Using wood pellets for heating is part of Sarajevo’s strategy to reduce air pollution, but the energy crisis has sent the prices through the roof.

The construction of the state-owned pellet factory will be jointly financed by the government of the Sarajevo Canton and public forest management company Sarajevo-Šume.

The initial funding earmarked for the project is BAM 8.46 million (EUR 4.2 million), of which EUR 3.15 million will be provided by the cantonal economy ministry and the remaining EUR 1.05 million by Sarajevo-Šume.

Adnan Delić, the economy minister of the Sarajevo Canton, said that tendering for the purchase of land and production equipment for the future factory is being prepared, while a public call for a conceptual design will be issued early next week.

The pellet factory will not be ready for this winter

Pellet production will certainly not begin this winter, but the factory will definitely be ready next year, according to Delić.
