PPC Renewables has invited bids from contractors to build a solar power plant at a former lignite mine in Ptolemaida, with an installed capacity of 550 MW, making it the biggest photovoltaic facility in Greece and one of the largest in Europe.

According to the announcement from PPC Renewables, the project is valued at EUR 216 million, not including solar panels, and the facility is targeted for completion in 2024.

The bid submission deadline is September 30, 2022, and the contractor will be required to produce a study, build, install and commission the plant, and supply equipment, except the solar panels, for the facility at a former coal mine in Ptolemaida.

Currently the largest photovoltaic plant in Greece is Hellenic Petroleum’s facility in the Kozani area, with a capacity of 204 MW.

The solar park in Ptolemaida will be a zero-subsidy project

The project will operate without state subsidies, and will sell electricity through power purchase agreements (PPAs). According to some reports, PPC Renewables plans to sell the solar park’s output to its parent company, Public Power Corp. (PPC).

PPC Renewables is working on over 2 GW of joint solar projects with Cantreva and RWE

PPC Renewables, as a minority partner, is preparing 1.3 GW in joint solar power projects in Greece with Cantreva Group, according to earlier reports. Also, a joint venture between PPC Renewables and Germany’s RWE Renewables has almost 1 GW in photovoltaic projects in the pipeline.

As part of plans to expand its green energy portfolio, PPC is also seeking to acquire projects in the Balkan region, particularly in Romania and Bulgaria.
