In the first four months of this year Romanians bought 195 hybrid and pure electric vehicles, figures provided by the Association of Producers and Importers of Automobiles (APIA) show. Green car sales have increased by 112% compared to the same period last year, portal Energynomics.ro reported.

Although the percentage of the increase in green cars sold exceeds the results of the general auto market (14.4%), volumes are still very low, representing only 0.7% of all new cars sold in the country, the article said. Last year, from January through April only 92 units were purchased. The increase in April alone was 32.4% for the vehicles, APIA’s data show.

The first place among the environmentally friendly cars is held by Toyota, with 116 units, an increase by 153.2%. It is followed by Lexus, with 48 units, 200% more than in the first four months of 2015. BMW sold eight units, after it didn’t deliver any green cars in the equivalent period a year before, while Land Rover participated with seven units, down by two.

APIA’s data show that throughout 2015 the number of electric and hybrid cars sold in Romania was 495, more than double (110%) than in the previous year.
