El Sun Energy is interested in building a 950 megawatt (MW) solar power plant, which would be the largest in Europe and almost twice the size of the currently largest Núñez de Balboa, which has a capacity of 500 MW. If all plans are accounted for, it is set to be the second-biggest, as the Horizeo project in France is envisaged to reach 1 GW.

El Sun Energy’s photovoltaic project is one of 216 on the list of potential investors interested in obtaining energy approvals in Croatia. The public call for granting approvals was launched by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, and the total capacity of all power plants is 6,000 MW. The ministry also announced that Croatia’s first auction for granting premiums for large renewable power plants would be held.

Budanko: The facility will be installed in an area of karst that is not usable for anything else

The location of the power plant is between the cities of Šibenik and Knin, in the municipality of Promina in Šibenik-Knin county.

Promina Mayor Tihomir Budanko told portal Šibenski that the request for a 950 MW solar power plant was submitted by the company El Sun Energy. It is a non-binding expression of interest to allow a potential investor to obtain energy approval, he added.

The location planned for the power plant is under a power line, in an area of karst that is not usable for anything else, and the municipality has an interest in using it because it could receive a solid compensation, said Budanko.

Investors want to install solar power plants with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW in Šibenik-Knin county

Of note, in Šibenik-Knin county investors want to install solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. El Sun Energy also plans to build two more PV facilities: one with 120 MW in Miljevci and another in Lozovac, with a capacity of 10 MW.

According to the Croatian register of companies, El Sun Energy is owned by Toni Rudolf Vlaić and Turkish company Elin.

The county has 900 hectares for solar

Šibenik-Knin county prefect Marko Jelić recently said that wind energy potential in the county is mostly used. There is great solar potential and has yet to be used, he added.

The county’s spatial plan envisages two large locations with a total of about 600 hectares for solar power plants, which with an additional 15 hectares in each municipality gives a total of 900 hectares.
