State-controlled electricity producer Hidroelectrica SA asked its shareholders for approval to start refurbishing the power plant at Mărişelu in Cluj county. Romania’s largest power producer earlier also announced the tender for the refurbishing of the Vidraru power plant.

The latter investment is estimated at EUR 80 million, said Remus Borza, the company’s judicial administrator, according to a report published by Romania Insider. Vidraru power plant is one of the largest electricity producing units in the country. It has a capacity of 220 MW and it went into operation in 1964.

Total investment in Mărişelu project amounts to EUR 64.5 million without value-added tax, the article said. The producer will pay for the revamping work from own funds. Works need to be completed in 36 months. The plant needs refurbishment, due to the equipment’s wear. Other issues are the humidity in the underground station and the modernization of the control room. The feasibility study for the work was carried out in 2011. Hidroelectrica has been under insolvency since June 2012 and is expected to exit insolvency this year.

Hidroelectrica also plans to inaugurate the 12MW Bretea power plant in June, following an investment of EUR 50 million. The company wants to inaugurate the 35 W Răstoliţa power plant this year. However, it still needs the government to decide on the expropriation corridor. Hidroelectrica has already invested EUR 200 million in this project.
