Seventeen D3 direct drive wind turbines of 3.2 MW each will be installed at the onshore project close to the coast of the Aegean Sea. Siemens has been awarded an order for the Kınık onshore power plant in Turkey’s province of the same name, 80 kilometres north of the city of Izmir. Customer Esinti Enerji AŞ also consigned maintenance to the engineering giant in the framework of a ten-year service contract including advanced remote monitoring and diagnostics. Installation of the turbines will start in the summer with commissioning scheduled for the autumn, Siemens said.

The site in the coastal region of western Turkey offers excellent wind conditions, as it is located along a mountainous ridge exposed to strong breezes from the sea, the press release said. The SWT-3.2-108 turbines feature an advanced performance with their 108-metre rotor diameters and direct drive technology with a highly efficient permanent magnet generator, according to the statement. Compared to geared units, these turbines have half as many parts and considerably less moving components, Siemens stated.

Turbines at the 54 MW Kınık wind farm will be installed on steel towers with a hub height of 79.5 meters. Towers will be sourced in the region, and so will construction works, service and maintenance of the project. With a fleet of around one hundred wind turbines installed over the last six years, Turkey is becoming more and more important for Siemens, said Thomas Richterich, chief executive for the onshore segment at Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division.

Since entering the market in 2009, generating capacity of 235 MW has been commissioned by Siemens Wind Power and another 350 MW are already under construction or contractedm the press release adds.
