Sokolac developing cogeneration on biomass with EBRD

Combined heat and power (CHP) project for Sokolac, supported by the Government of the Republic of Srpska, was presented in Jahorina mountain resort, Srna news agency carried. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development financed the documentation for the pilot project within the Regional Energy Efficiency Programme (REEP), approved under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). The municipality, located in East Sarajevo, should implement the endeavour through a public–private partnership. The project aims to secure sustainability of the district heating system and expand it to the rest of the urban area and some of the settlements adjacent to the town.
Assistant minister of industry, energy and mining of Srpska Milenko Todorović said the entity government backed the plans for the power and heat production in December, after receiving notes from the responsible ministries. He added the system fuelled by biomass should provide heating capacity of 4.1 MW and 1 MW of electricity. Mirko Šarović, minister of foreign trade and economic relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated his institution is one of the partners in the project, part of the country’s plan for renewables. He added this is also a way for Sokolac to dispose of biowaste.
Milovan Bjelica, municipality head, said the documentation should be complete soon and announced an international tender. The investment is estimated at BAM 15.2 million (EUR 7.77 million).
