Enel Green Power, Monsson Alma to develop 1 GW of solar, wind in Romania

Renewable energy company Enel Green Power, part of the Enel Group, and Monsson Alma, a subsidiary of Monsson Group, have signed an agreement on the development of 500 MW of wind power and 500 MW of solar projects in Romania.

Enel Green Power and Monsson Alma have also agreed to develop storage capacities. According to local media, the deal was signed at the beginning of the year.

The projects will be ready for construction in the next three years. They will consist of 500 MW in wind power plants and 500 MW in solar parks, said Sebastian Enache, business development manager at Monsson Group, Ziarul Financiar reported.

The agreement also envisages the development of more than 300 MW in batteries.

Romania currently has wind farms with an installed capacity of 3 GW, and 1.4 GW in solar power plants. According to a recent update, the country could get another 1.4 GW in wind farms in the next five years.

Romania’s authorities need to clarify the status of energy contracts, and issues regarding land used for construction of renewables projects

Monsson said it would be very important for future projects in Romania to clarify the status of energy contracts such as power purchase agreements and legislation on land use with regard to construction of power plants.

Monsson Group, controlled by Swedish businessman Emanuel Muntmark, has developed solar and wind energy projects with an installed capacity of 2 GW. They include the 600 MW Fântânele-Cogealac system, the largest onshore wind farm in the European Union. It plans to develop and build another 2.5 GW over the next 10 years.

Enel Green Power operates 47 GW in green energy capacity, out of which 22.6 GW in Europe. It includes 534 MW in Romania: 498 MW in wind power, and the rest in solar power plants. Enel also distributes power and gas in Romania.
