Germany announces EUR 72.1 million in grants, loans for energy, environment in Kosovo*

Kosovo* will receive EUR 72.1 million from Germany within a bilateral development cooperation program for projects including wastewater treatment, energy efficiency improvements, and renewables.

In the next two years, German investments from the dedicated funds will focus on the modernization of Kosovo’s energy sector, European Union integration process, and sustainable economic development.

Grants make up EUR 34 million while the remainder is in long-term loans subsidized by Germany.

District heating company Termokos in Pristina is getting a EUR 24 million loan for solar thermal technology. Transmission system operator KOSTT will borrow EUR 13.5 million for grid development.

Support to the EU integration process and contributions for improving services for Kosovo’s citizens include projects for sewage disposal and wastewater management services in line with EU standards.

German investments will increase the share of solar energy in the energy mix

In the energy sector, German investments will improve energy efficiency and increase the share of renewable energy, mainly solar energy, the ministry said.

Activities for sustainable economic development include support to labour market-oriented vocational education and business development, for example in the joint Kosovar-German Innovation and Training Park in Prizren.

Germany will continue investments in renewables, sewage, and waste disposal

Ambassador of Germany in Kosovo* Jorn Rohde said his country is Kosovo’s biggest bilateral donor and biggest foreign investor.

Germany will continue with significant investments in public infrastructure in Kosovo*, focusing on renewable energy, sewage, and waste disposal, he added.

Finance Minister Hykmete Bajrami said Kosovo* is working towards transforming the economy and institutions in line with EU requirements.

Since 1999, Germany invested more than EUR 660 million in Kosovo’s* development through bilateral cooperation.
