The head of the small municipality has explained local authorities lean on renewables for development. An equivalent wind farm should be added together with a 5 MW solar park, Martin Baričević said and pointed to the possibility to install a pumped storage hydropower facility and a gas-fueled power plant.

Five turbines of 2 MW each were formally put into operation near Zadar by a subsidiary of Austria’s Kelag-Kärntner Elektrizitäts AG. The wind farm project is worth EUR 15 million. Enercon from Germany supplied its E-70 systems.

Interenergo doo, based in Slovenia, plans to generate 21.5 GWh per year. It is quivalent to the consumption of 6,200 households, according to its calculations. The idea dates from more than two decades ago, according to Martin Baričević, the municipal chief in Jasenice.

He has explained the site is a former industrial complex and that obstacles ranged from ownership issues to the lack of trust among investors, ezadar reported. The local official, who runs a few villages on the seaside in Croatia’s southwest, said they lean on renewable energy sources for economic development.

Slovenian Interenergo, controlled by Kelag, projected annual output at 21.5 GWh.

Baričević asserted another wind farm, also with five turbines, should be installed. The plan is also to make a solar power plant with the capacity of 5 MW, in his words.

The municipality is pushing for the parcel with harmful lye pools in what was an alumina factory to be rehabilitated and prime minister Andrej Plenković promised it would be done, Baričević stated. He revealed the intention to turn them into a reservoir for a pumped storage hydropower plant, where another reservoir would be on the Velebit mountain.

The land owned by the adjacent town of Obrovac can be used for a gas-fueled power plant, the municipality head suggested. He is currently in his sixth mandate in the position. Plenković was present at the ceremony.

Kelag operates within Kärntner Energieholding Beteiligungs GmbH. Bremen-based wpd windmanager took over the operational and technical management, administrative coordination and reporting obligations for Jasenice wind farm in July.
