North Macedonia has spent MKD 11.2 billion (about EUR 181.9 million) on environmental protection in 2018, an increase of MKD 1.2 billion (about EUR 19.5 million) compared to 2017, when these expenditures totaled MKD 10 billion (about EUR 162.4 million).

According to data from the State Statistical Office of the North Macedonia, the total environmental protection spending in 2018 amounted to MKD 11.2 billion (about EUR 181.9 million) and was allocated according to environmental benefit.

The biggest share went on waste management – 64.2%

The biggest share went on waste management (64.2%), followed by educational, training and other similar activities (9.7%) and expenditures on wastewater management (9.4%), the press release reads.

Environmental expenditures include investments in assets for environmental protection and payments for the maintenance of these assets.

Of the total environmental expenditures, the largest amount was spent by the industry sector and specialized producers

The share of investments in the total environmental protection expenditures amounted to 74.7%, and the share of payments for maintenance of assets was 25.3%, the State Statistical Office said.

Of the total environmental expenditures, the largest amount was spent by the industry sector and specialized producers, MKD 9 billion (about EUR 146.1 million), an increase of MKD 200 million (about EUR 3.25 million) compared to 2017, but a decrease in terms of percentage, from 87.5% in 2017 to 80.1% last year.

Out of the expenditures made by the industry sector and specialized producers, 83.9% went for investments and 16.1% for asset maintenance.
