The Republika Srpska government is planning to implement a number of energy efficiency projects, Prime Minister Željka Cvijanović said. The projects to improve the energy efficiency of 31 buildings will be financed from a World Bank loan of USD 13 million.

The loan has a repayment period of 25 years with a five year grace period and at interest rates of 1.25% and 1.4%.

She told a ceremony to mark the start of reconstruction of an elementary school in the town of Prnjavor that 17 buildings have already been fully reconstructed under the energy efficiency projects. The work on the school will cost around EUR 350,000.

The ceremony was attended by Republika Srpska Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology Srebrenka Golić who said the energy efficiency projects will cover education and health care buildings.

Investments like this lead to savings in expenses of between 40% and 50%, she said, adding that a new heating system will be installed in the school along with thermal isolation, new windows and other things.

More than 300 schools and other state institutions have applied for funding to do reconstruction work on their buildings and raise their level of energy efficiency. The government and ministry selected those buildings which were most in need of reconstruction.

Golić and her ministrz have been working with the UNDP since 2015 on the Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings in the Republika Srpska project.
