This year the municipality of Tivat in Montenegro celebrated World Energy Efficiency Day, March 5 through several activities implemented within three days. On this occasion, high schoolers displayed their patents,  scientists presented their work and companies presented their portfolio in the field of energy efficiency.

„Tivat Municipality has been promoting the values of sustainable development for years through a large number of different activities and it has been recognized as the local government striving towards new challenges and aims with a clear ambition,“ said the Mayor, Snežana Matijević, at the energy efficiency conference organized on March 6 in reference to marking the  the occasion of World Energy Efficiency Day.

At the opening of the conference. GIZ Open Regional Fund for South-East Europe – Energy Efficiency (ORF-EE) Project Manager Jasna Sekulović said that GIZ provided Tivat municipality with a software for monitoring energy consumption. Also, the municipality administration recently established a Secretariat for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency.

“This is a unique example not just in Montenegro but beyond, and it speaks about the municipality’s commitment to address the topic of energy efficiency. I am also really proud to see that the support, among others, provided by the GIZ ORF-EE has encouraged the Municipality’s independent initiative for change in the field of energy efficiency.I hope other municipalities in Montenegro and the region will follow this example,” she said.

Mayor Matijević said the town will announce a tender for the development of a geographic information system for public lighting. At the same time it started working on the first local energy plan. By the end of the year the municipality will pass a new three-year-program for the promotion of energy efficiency and finish installation of solar panels on the municipal building and Župa sports hall.

The opening ceremony was followed by presentations from the Directorate for Energy Efficiency, UNDP and NGO Green Home. Participants of the conference presented positive examples and informed the audience about innovative approaches in this field.

The conference was followed by an educational exhibition where the students of Mladost High School from Tivat presented their patents. Members of the Science Promotion Foundation PRONA displayed an energy bicycle, a solar collector, thermographic camera, at the same time demonstrating the phenomenon of climate change.
