The waste recovering company Ecopack Bulgaria began using the new equipment for sorting glass packaging by colour. The new installation, worth 2.5 million levs (EUR 1.28 million) is able to sort through 100 tonnes of glass packaging every day.

The equipment was installed in the Ecopack’s facility in the village of Ravno Pole, 10 kilometres east of capital Sofia, which was first opened in 2008 after the initial investment of 3.8 milion levs (EUR 1.92 million). The new equipment would double factory’s capacity, and adding to that is ability to sort glass by colour, according to Ecopack’s press release.

“This is good news for the recycling facilities in Bulgaria and glass packaging producers – they would get a cleaner raw material and hence better packaging,” said Todor Burgudzhiev, chief executive officer of Ecopack Bulgaria. He reminded that glass market in the country grew 30% last year, compared to 15% increase in other packaging materials.

The new facility was opened by the Ecopack Bulgaria’s Svetoslav Atanasov, accompanied by Ivelina Vasileva, Bulgarian minister of environmental and water, and Yordanka Fandakova, mayor of Sofia.

“The Ministry will keep supporting investments in green ideas, green thinking and green economy,” said minister Vasileva.

In 2015, Ecopack processed a total of 91,031 tonnes of waste and held just over 42% of Bulgaria’s waste recovery market.

The installation in Ravno Pole will help the European Union country contribute to the EU’s “circular economy” with the European Commission’s plan to have 75% of glass recycled by 2025. The goal was almost reached already in 2014, according to report by the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE).
