Asahi’s Romanian subsidiary Ursus Breweries will get electricity through a multi-year virtual power purchase agreement from Enery’s solar power project under development.

Ursus Breweries, part of Asahi Europe and International, and Austria-based Enery signed a multi-year virtual power purchase agreement or VPPA for renewable energy for beer production in Romania. The local firm will offtake power production from a future solar park with a peak capacity of more than 50 MW in Romania, according to the announcement.

“We are committed to assisting businesses in their journey towards carbon neutrality and providing competitive, reliable green electricity, which remains one of our core objectives. Our team finds inspiration in making a tangible impact by advocating conscious and sustainable business choices,” Enery said.

Through its international branch, Asahi Group Holdings, headquartered in Japan, owns 19 beer production facilities in eight European countries, with brands including Pilsner Urquell, Grolsch and Kozel.

Enery said it is currently generating over 200 GWh of clean electricity per year in power plants with 280 MW in overall capacity. The utility has more than 7 GW under development.
