The Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection published the plan for waste management through 2020 for public consultation, ending on June 30. The document improves the policy in line with the concept of circular economy with collection, recycling and composting, according to minister Slaven Dobrović. He added this way Croatia will be able to meet its obligations to increase treatment to half of its waste paper, glass, plastic and metals by 2020.

Adoption of the plan will open the way to tap on EUR 475 million from operational programme Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014–2020, Dobrović stated. The most important measures are composting at home and the introduction of recycling centres.

Waste management sites should help reduce the capacities for the treatment of mixed municipal waste, against the current system, based on large centres. The new concept is planned to contribute to the reduction of costs for the transport of the material, the ministry said. The paper includes efforts to prevent waste creation.
