Serbia marks European Mobility Week by promoting sustainable solutions

There are 27 cities and municipalities in Serbia that participate this year in the European Mobility Week. The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, Ambassador Sem Fabrizi, noted more than 2,600 local authorities organized activities throughout the continent.

The start of the European Mobility Week 2020 in Serbia was officially marked in Kruševac, the city that won the European Mobility Week Award for last year in the category of larger municipalities. The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, Ambassador Sem Fabrizi, presented the award to Mayor Jasmina Palurović on behalf of European Commissioner for Transport Adina-Ioana Vălean.

Over 2,600 communities organized activities this year

“Today we are here in Kruševac, to invite all cities to participate in the European Mobility Week. It is a great event, which is being celebrated all over Europe, all over Serbia. From September 16 to 22, in 49 European countries, in more than 2,600 cities, the same thing is happening as in Kruševac,” he said at the event.

Fabrizi emphasized that this year’s European Mobility Week has the motto “Mobility for all without harmful gases.” The first message is that it is necessary to reduce air pollution, the second message refers to the connection between movement and human health, and the third element is public space, which belongs to citizens, not cars, he said.

“In Kruševac and 26 other cities and local communities across the country, people participate in various activities such as walking, running, cycling, riding electric scooters and driving electric cars. The European Union has launched a revolutionary idea – the Green Deal – which strives to make the entire continent neutral, when it comes to carbon emissions, by 2050” the ambassador added.

The Car-Free Day will be marked tomorrow in Belgrade.

EU standards are best for environment, development, society in Serbia

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlović said the European Mobility Week is important for the EU but also for Serbia and added the country wants to harmonize its standards with that of the EU as the best ones for its environment, development and society. Activities in Serbia within the campaign are coordinated by the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities and her ministry.

Mihajlović invited other cities to participate in mobility, not only during the celebration but throughout the year. She announced that from next year, the ministry would award a prize worth EUR 8,500 as an incentive to local self-governments for urban mobility.

Prizes for Endomondo challenge

Users of the Endomondo mobile application who burn the most calories by walking, cycling or rollerblading by September 21 will win prizes.

The campaign, which started in 2002, allows people to explore the role of city streets and experiment with practical solutions to urban challenges such as air pollution. It aims to improve public health and the quality of life by promoting clean mobility and sustainable urban transport.

The European Mobility Week promotes sustainable mobility solutions to locals and highlights the challenges. By participating, cities can demonstrate the benefits of cleaner transport choices and make progress towards better mobility in Europe.
